How PEX Fittings Are Used in PEX Plumbing Systems

PEX fittings are used to connect the flexible polyethylene pipes used in PEX water plumbing systems. Flexible PEX tubes are a low cost, problem free alternative to metal or plastic systems. Plumbing Tips - Inspection

A good way to prevent grease clogs is to pour about a half gallon of boiling water down the drain every other day. However if you already have a grease clog, try pouring some hot vinegar down the drain and letting is set for about 20 minutes and then follow it with boiling water after the 20 minute vinegar soak.

Baseboard Radiator Heat

So what makes baseboard radiator heat a good option to pursue? The baseboards of your home are a great place to install a heating system because of the principle that heat rises. Through the use of a baseboard radiator heat system your whole home will be able to be heated, from the floor on up. Baseboard hot water heating systems work well because the "radiators" that bring warmth into the room are installed low to the floor, typically along the baseboard; water is heated in a boiler tank in the utility room just like the water used for the hot water plumbing in your house. This water is heated, either by gas, oil or electricity in a system that is similar to, but separate from the water heater that supplies your plumbing system. These systems are clean because they are totally enclosed, so you do not have to worry about dusty air being blown through vents all over your house, and they are extremely quiet because of the way they work.

Let's take a quick look at how a baseboard radiator heat system works, and why it may be a good option for your home. We have already established that water is heated, and this is what provides the heat to your home; but once the water is heated what happens? Well in general this is how it works.most baseboard radiator heat systems have an electric motor that pumps the water through the house through a series of pipe systems. When you install your system you want to make sure that the first radiator of the house is installed in the main room, or the room you would want heated the best because hot water enters the first radiator first, so that radiator is normally the hottest of any. The heat flows from the surface of that radiator, and some of that heat is transferred, and heats the room. Thus you get a nice toasty room, but the water that comes out of the exit end of that radiator is cooled somewhat.

The water follows the series of pipes, flowing to the next radiator in the system where more heat is extracted from the water and released into the room. By nature of the system, the last room in the system receives the coolest water. Once it has run its course, the water goes back to the boiler where it is heated and re-circulated again. This is a closed system. All the water in the system remains in the system. The main water supply from the house is fed into the circulation system through a pressure regulator so that any lost water is replaced instantly.

This is a great system for families like mine where not everyone likes the same temperature. It is almost like having a different thermostat for each room of the house, but significantly less expensive. However, not all baseboard radiator heat systems have the problem of the water cooling significantly from the first radiator to the last. You can buy a system that has a flow control valve on each of the radiators which is adjusted so that a smaller amount of water flows through the first radiator, and so that the excess flow is diverted around and on to the next radiator in the system.

So, the big question that comes to mind is, if the room is heated through water, how can you control the heat that you want? Wouldn't that mean you are at the mercy of how hot the water is? Normally the boiler temperature is controlled internally so that heat is available instantly when it is called for by the room thermostat. Basically, when you flip on your thermostat, a signal is sent to the circulation pump which turns on and begins circulating hot water through the house. Like a traditional heater, you determine when and how much heat you want, and hopefully the room you are in isn't too far down the line and you can get it.

Crawlspace - Underhouse - Floods - Water Under Your House Can Cause a Variety of Problems

Standing water or wet soil in your home's crawlspace can come from a variety of sources. These may include but are certainly not limited to the following.

(1) A leaking freshwater supply line, usually galvanized, copper, pvc or pex.
(2) A leaking sewer drain line, usually cast iron, galvanized, clay or ABS.
(3) Naturally high groundwater table.
(4) Over watering of plants around your home (creating a man made high water table).
(5) Sprinklers spraying through the crawlspace vents.
(6) Leaking swimming pools (this is rare).
(7) Improperly directed gutter downspouts.
(8) Stream or river flooding.

Standing water or extremely damp soil in your home's crawlspace (under house) can cause a variety of structural problems and health concerns. Excess humidity caused by the evaporation of standing water or wet soil in your crawlspace can cause mold growth on the wooden foundation and the bottom of sub flooring. It can also cause warping or buckling of sub flooring and mold growth in the living area of the building. If your home has H.V.A.C. Pass Plumbing Test

The International Plumbing License test is hard to gain a pass from. In order to win an authorized plumbing license, everyone must pass a government authorized plumbing test. Without a proper plumbing guide, this test proves to be an obstacle for many good plumber apprentices and school learning plumbers. But there are sources which provide simple solutions to this situation.

As far as the International Plumbing License test is concerned, the book you get is a tome. Have you tried reading through the International Plumbing Code and International Gas Code? There are few books I've read that are more dense. Am I thick? Or is it that the guide is at fault and is actually making it more difficult to pass my plumbing test?

Those are the things I used to ask myself. I also wondered, 'Perhaps I'm just getting very frustrated with waffle I know I need to understand, or perhaps there really is some reason for this plumbing test that does make sense. Whatever the case, understanding the rules and regulations can not be avoided.' I'm now aware that in the USA an average plumber earns 1.2 times that of the pay-packet of an average attorney. (Figures: 2008).

In Europe, the average plumber's pipe reaches 1.9 times longer than an accountant's. That's right. But when I first started plumbing, I had no idea about how much I would enjoy it or just how much I would earn from it.

So how did I pass my plumbing license test? I looked through the International Plumbing and Gas Codes. I knew I was a great practical plumber, but I just couldn't cope with the codes. I was about half way there, but I needed a good guide to explain what the plumbers' bible was saying.

So I got a guide.

Any good plumbers' test guide should include: guides and definitions which include illustrations, figuring and calculating fixtures required, water distribution throughout the project, including sizing, plans and design, sanitary drain sizes and planning, storm drainage sizing, septic tank and drain field sizing with local planning, gas pipe sizes and distribution, gas appliance venting, accounting and returns (if you're planning on going it alone), and plumbing symbols and isometrics.

Kitchen Plumbing

Kitchen plumbing forms an integral part of kitchen design. The majority of kitchens possess a straightforward plumbing setup which is inclusive of cold- and hot-water supply lines, waste line to connect to the sink, and a pipe of gas supply for kitchens having gas range. Some kitchens contain hookups for disposer, water-treatment system, icemaker, dishwasher, and immediate hot water. These are normally associated with the plumbing of the sink.

Plumbing - U-Trap Pipe Replacement

A few weeks ago, our family noticed water coming out of the cabinets around the kitchen and bathroom sinks. With a little inspection, we discovered the same problem in each case was at fault. The U-trap pipe was leaking due to being worn out from years of use. The pipe as its name suggests is U-shaped.

The importance of the U-trap other than keeping your floor dry and getting rid of water is that because some water is in the bottom of the pipe at all times, this helps prevent sewer gases from entering your home and harming you or your loved ones.

After diagnosing the problem, the next step is to go to the hardware store and get a replacement. Other than a flashlight (no matches or open fire source!), you will need a pipe wrench(only if you can't use your fingers to remove the nuts holding the pipe) and replacement pipe (either metal or PVC). You should check the pipe to see if you can remove it without a wrench, thus saving you some money if you don't need one, providing there is not one in the toolkit already. A word about pipe wrenches: You know that number they give such as 18"? That refers to the handle length AND the full opened width of the wrench jaws. Confusing, huh? Just be sure you pay for what you need.

After getting what you need from the store, unscrew the collars or nuts around the pipe, gently move it a bit to see if it moves, then pull out of position, and insert the new pipe and appropriate hardware. See that it is secure. Turn on the water. Check for leaks. If you have anymore problems with leaks from the same source, recheck all pipe connections for the U-pipe and P-pipe. The P-pipe is the one that leads from the U-trap pipe into the wallpipe connection, which, as the name suggests is the pipe leading into the wall and from there the sewer.
